Qualification Orientation

Method followed

Use this step to qualify the initiative.  This is about reflecting on the basic information already collected and what the implications are.

  1. Perform some basic qualification.

Try and reduce the effort to consumable terms either iro of Money, Duration and/or Architecture Deliverable/s.  Once information is in any of the latter two forms, it could easily be converted into money.  By doing this it is more easy to get a handle on the planning and sizing aspects.

Though early this is about getting to grips with potential impacts and other events not immediately apparent.

Use a simple 1-5 rating scale to form an opinion on the complexity of the endeavor

Attempt to qualify the Architecture effort iro Enterprise, Domain or Solution.  The reason for doing this is that each will drive distinct behavior and delivery efforts.

  1. Perform more advanced qualification.

Advanced Qualification is about calculating some indices that could simplify decisions later on or provide an early heads-up.

    1. Calculate QI(Qualification Index)

QI = (Done-it-before*Size*StrategicValue)

    1. Calculate OI(Obligation Index)

QI = (Anticipated Expenses ÷ Current available Operational Budget)

Architecture is also an investment choice.  Therefore by assigning an architect/yourself to perform a particular task by implication the investment decision is made.  Therefore the argument about scarce key resources is very pertinent.  Ideally then a method should be found to more accurately determine priority and attention.
